Abstract

Al-Hajjaj Bin Yusuf al-Thaqafi played an important role in the history of the Umayyad dynasty. His administrative and military capabilities enabled him to establish outstanding foundations—a matter that made him among the most distinguished governors of history. Historians and critics as well differ in determining the dimensions of the Al-Hajja's' personality. While some of them are forced to adhere to some historical facts, other historians and critics carefully praise and justify his doings. As such, Al-Hajaj Bin Yusuf is among the most debatable figures whose period of ruling Iraq lasted twenty years and extended since the year (75-95 / 695 - 714m). His ruling period was full of events that have bothered the Umayyad Caliphate. In this sense, any research on this historical figure requires reconsideration of all the events that accompanied his ruling period.  The research, accordingly, sheds the lights on the reasons that led to debatable discussions about him; it also examines his administrative achievements and their consequences.
